Credit Reports - Sometimes, if you’re an industrious person, and are very motivated to turn your life around, you can call your creditors yourself and try to negotiate a debt settlement. Often, if you’re nice and let the lender know that you really want to try to fix things, they will help you out in a big way. Don’t go into it defensively.

In Chapter 13, the court approves a repayment plan that allows you to use your future income to pay off your debts during a three-to-five-year period, rather than surrender any property. After you have made all the payments under the plan, you receive a discharge of your debts.;

The credit reporting agency must tell you everything in your report, including medical information and the sources of the information. The credit reporting agency also must give you a list of everyone who has requested your report within the past year-two years for employment-related requests.

The Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) prohibits credit discrimination on the basis of sex, race, marital status, religion, national origin, age, or receipt of public assistance. Creditors may ask to this intimation (except religion) in certain situations, but they may not use it to discriminate against they at that time deciding whether to grant they credit.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act is the federal law that dictates how and when a debt collector may contact you. A debt collector may not call you before 8 a.m., after 9 p.m., or while you're at work if the collector knows that your employer doesn't approve of the calls. Collectors may not harass you, lie, or use unfair practices when they try to collect a debt. And they must honor a written request from you to stop further contact.
